Good morning.

  1. Thank you for inviting me to say a few words at the MIA-Sunway TES Accountancy Quiz 2019, on behalf of the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MoE).
  2. The MoE is always delighted to support unique initiatives such as the AQ, as these help children and youth learn more effectively and prepare them for the digital economy and Industrial Revolution 4.0. The AQ2019 is supported by the MoE and accredited as a national-level curriculum programme.
  3. Congratulations to the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and Sunway TES for successfully organising the AQ from 2013 onwards and taking it from strength to strength. Indeed, it is clear that the AQ is a critical element in a pipeline for identifying and nurturing young talents who are interested in accountancy and business. It is very important that Malaysia achieves its goal of producing 60,000 accountancy professionals to support business and the economy, and thus nation building.
  4. The AQ has also successfully promoted inclusion for many students. One challenge that the MoE faces is promoting inclusivity for all students, urban and rural, and we are actively trying to address the gaps and disparities. Usually, urban students get better access to facilities and infrastructure and educational initiatives.
  5. By taking the AQ online, the AQ is able to open up access and successfully reach even students outside the more urbanised and developed states. I understand that this year the AQ2019 attracted more than 5,000 students, including those from schools outside the Klang Valley. There are finalists at the National Level of the AQ who are from Sarawak, Perak, Selangor, Terengganu and Pahang. I am delighted to see you here. Congratulations to all of you for your achievement. Keep up the good work!
  6. Another challenge that the MoE faces is to produce students who are prepared for the digital economy. Currently, the MoE is undertaking reforms to integrate these skills into the curriculum and to ensure that students don’t just score good grades but demonstrate the desired skills, such as good English, knowledge, values and ethics, patriotism & spirituality, leadership abilities and critical thinking.
  7. These are all attributes that we are championing through the ongoing implementation of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013 – 2025 (that covers Preschool to Post-Secondary Education), namely knowledge, thinking skills, leadership skills, bilingual proficiency, national identity, ethics and spirituality.
  8. However, we cannot do it alone. We are counting on the support of all our stakeholders, especially the students, parents and teachers present here today. We can move from a system that is grades-oriented to one that embeds the skills and knowledge that children and youth need to navigate the digital economy. Let us train our children to be more innovative and creative thinkers and problem solvers who have strong moral compasses, so they always do the right and smart thing. This will be the building blocks of a bright future for them.
  9. Students, teachers and parents. I am confident that the AQ2019 is a vehicle that can help develop these core skills, namely knowledge especially on accounting and business, teamwork and leadership, critical thinking and problem solving, and proficiency in English communications.
  10. I am sure that you are all eager to get started on the AQ finals. So, without further ado, I wish you all the best today in the AQ. Congratulations once again on reaching the national finals and may the best team win.

Thank you!
