  • MIA Examination Committee Members & Facilitators,
  • Graduates of MIA QE Class of 2018,
  • Ladies and Gentlemen

Good morning and salam sejahtera.

  1. On behalf of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, I am delighted to be here today on this auspicious occasion where we celebrate the success of our young accountants. Congratulations to all graduates of the MIA Qualifying Examination (QE) Class of 2018 for successfully completing the QE!
  2. With your success, a great number of doors will open to you as you pursue your career path. In particular, MIA looks forward to welcoming you as MIA members.
  3. With the MIA membership, you will enjoy both professional recognition and many value-added benefits. MIA engages extensively across multiple channels with members to enhance members’ satisfaction and add value, while developing competency and enforcing good behaviour to protect public interest.
  4. The benefits and privileges that await you as MIA CA(M) are, among others, access to high-quality knowledge and skills enhancement that have been tailored to suit the local context. Continuous learning is essential for all accountants to ensure that you are always up-to-date and relevant to the dynamic business environment of the 21st century. MIA delivered 1,026 continuing professional education (CPE) programmes last year including our flagship event, the MIA International Accountants Conference.
  5. Our various CPE activities benefited close to 37,000 participants in total in 2017. Since MIA is emphasising heavily on technology adoption to future-proof our members for the digital economy and Industrial Revolution 4.0, we organised several CPE programmes on data analytics, artificial intelligence, cyber security, blockchain and cloud applications related to accountancy which were very popular. We are also ensuring that in addition to technical expertise, our CPE imparts the higher order thinking skills and qualities deemed vital by employers – namely professional judgement, problem-solving, analysis, communications, empathy, and leadership skills, to name a few.

Ladies and gentlemen,

  1. Apart from continuous learning, MIA members enjoy many networking opportunities that support your professional and personal growth. Do leverage the many events organised by the MIA Young Professional Committee (YPC), whereby MIA engages with our young Members to gather feedback and identify your concerns and needs. So far, MIA’s YPC has explored issues such as women in leadership (women constitute over 50% of MIA membership), technology disruption and the profession’s future relevancy.
  2. Through MIA membership, you will also have many opportunities to play a regional role. MIA is very active in supporting the progress of the ASEAN Economic Community and the ASEAN accountancy fraternity through our participation in the ASEAN Federation of Accountants (AFA) and our regional and global linkages.
  3. In particular, MIA is heavily involved in talent mobility and the development of accountancy standards and quality within the region through our leadership of the ASEAN CPA Certification. ASEAN CPA elevates the perceived value of accountancy professionals, facilitates talent mobility, enhances the provision and regulation of regional accountancy services, and drives the adoption of standards and best practices. MIA is advocating that ASEAN CPAs be granted Registered Foreign Professional Accountants status enabling them to work across the ASEAN region.
  4. As of 30 June 2018, 473 MIA members had been conferred the ASEAN CPA Certification, the largest number among the ASEAN Member States. As an MIA member, you too can eventually be an ASEAN CPA member, and enjoy the opportunity to contribute to ASEAN and further your career through regional talent mobility.
  5. MIA membership also allows you to enjoy numerous lifestyle benefits and privileges via version 2.0 of the MIA Digital Membership Privilege Card, which is highly popular and appreciated by our members. Do check out the card’s access to lifestyle benefits and privileges along with the additional features such as circulars and viewing and updating of member profiles for members’ satisfaction and convenience.
  6. While MIA offers a host of benefits for our members, as the regulator of the accountancy profession, MIA would like to remind you as newly-minted accountancy professionals, to always uphold our core professional values of accountability, integrity and trust. We must always behave ethically in order to uphold and protect the public interest.

Ladies and gentlemen,

  1. The QE is the cumulative effort of many parties and supporters. On behalf of MIA, I would like to thank everybody for their support in building the recognition of the QE as a professional chartered examination and a platform for developing high-calibre accountancy talent to support nation building.
  2. Last but not least, I would also like to thank all the graduates here today for their commitment to the QE. Once again, congratulations on your success and I wish you all the best on your journey as chartered accountants and future members of MIA.
