Extension of MOU with Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA)

On 22 August 2019, MIA and MICPA signed a Notice of Extension of the MOU signed last year, followed by the launch of MICPA’s special membership pathway for MIA members. The earlier MoU between MIA and MICPA was signed for the purpose of formalising the working relationship between the two bodies and to explore a pathway for MIA members towards MICPA membership.

The signees were MIA President Salihin Abang and MICPA President Dr Verindeerjeet Singh whilst the witnesses were MIA Vice President Huang Shze Jiun and MICPA Vice President Dato’ Gan Ah Tee.

Extension of MOU with CPA Australia

On 17 July 2019, CPA Australia extended its MOU with MIA for another 1-year term (1 August 2019 – 31 July 2020) on the special admission pathway programme for MIA members.

This is the 5th year that MIA and CPA Australia continue the effort to increase the number of accountants with professional qualification whereby they become a member with CPA status upon successful completion of the required papers.

MIA CEO Dr Nurmazilah Dato’ Mahzan and CPA Australia Country Head – Malaysia Ms Priya Terumalay signed the MOU extension.

MOU with Kampuchea Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Auditors (KICPAA) and National Accounting Council of Kampuchea (NAC)

In enhancing the development of the profession, MIA has signed a tripartite MOU with Kampuchea Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Auditors (KICPAA) and National Accounting Council of Kampuchea (NAC) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The signatories were H.E. Tayi Ngy, Secretary of State of Ministry of Economy and Finance, Cambodia and Chairman of National Accounting Council, MIA President Salihin Abang and Seida Heng, President of KICPAA.

The objectives and scope of the MOU include sharing information relating to the accounting profession in both countries, sharing views on the implementation of IPSAS accrual accounting, gaining and providing insight on the compliance and enforcement framework governing the parties involved, and improvement of audit quality and capacity building of the Small and Medium Practitioners in Cambodia.

Extension of MOU with CPA Australia

Continuing to advance the profession, MIA signed an extension of the MOU with CPA Australia for a 1-year term for the period 1 August 2018 until 31 July 2019.

MIA CEO, Dr Nurmazilah Dato’ Mahzan and CPA Australia Country Head – Malaysia, Ms Priya Terumalay signed the MOU extension.

Under the MOU’s special admission pathway programme, MIA members with at least five years of membership in good standing, may become a CPA member upon successfully passing the required number of exam papers.

MOU with ACCA

Consistent with its strategy in developing the profession, MIA today renewed its MOU with ACCA for another three years. The MOU allows for a special pathway for MIA members to obtain ACCA professional qualification.

Signing for MIA was CEO, Dr Nurmazilah Dato’ Mahzan, while ACCA was represented by Edward Ling, Head of ACCA Malaysia, witnessed by Datin SK Yap, Executive Director of Membership & Operations, MIA and Ms Vilashini, Head of Members, ACCA Malaysia. Also present were MIA President Salihin Abang and and Dato’ Merina Abu Tahir, President of ACCA Malaysia Advisory Committee.

With the MOU in place, it is hoped that more MIA members will register for the professional programmes and add value to their existing qualification.

LoC with Kaplan Financial

In line with MIA’s long-term strategy to promote professional qualification among its members, a Letter of Collaboration (LoC) was signed today between MIA and Kaplan Financial. With the LoC, MIA members will be entitled to discounts of up to 10% for enrolment in any professional courses offered by Kaplan Live Online, namely ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW.

Signing on behalf of MIA was CEO Dr Nurmazilah Dato’ Mahzan while Kaplan was represented by Tanya Worsley, Director of International Operations Global Accountancy.

Also present were MIA Executive Director, Membership & Operations Datin SK Yap and Kaplan Business Relationship Manager Zaiti Waddell.

MoU with Lao Chamber of Professional Accountants and Auditors (LCPAA)

The MoU with LCAA sees the implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards in financial services sector as a continuation of the work that MIA is currently doing with the World Bank in Laos.

It aims to facilitate employee secondment and exchange particularly in respect of professional development including organising seminars and conferences, as well as to assist in associated activities to support any promotion based on this cooperation.

The MOU was signed by MIA President, En Salihin Abang and LCPAA President, Dr Phirany Phissamay and witnessed by MIA CEO, Dr Nurmazilah Dato’ Mahzan and LCPAA Vice President, Mr Sonexay Silaphet.

MoU with Malaysian Accounting Standards Board (MASB)

The MIA and MASB entered into the MoU to play a collaborative role to ensure MASB standards are consistently applied in Malaysia and it meets with international compliance, as well as to ensure Malaysia can consistently assert International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) compliance in respect of the financial statements of non-private entities in Malaysia. The MoU was first signed on 22 January 2016.

The signee representing MIA was its President En Salihin Abang while MASB was represented by its Chairman En Mohamed Raslan Abdul Rahman. Witnessing the signing ceremony were MIA CEO Dr Nurmazilah Dato’ Mahzan and MASB Executive Director Ms Tan Bee Leng.

MoU with MyFinB

The MIA and MyFinB entered into a MoU on the following initiatives:

  1. Carrying out a series of capacity building programmes involving topics such as Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), Big Data / Analytics and Cognitive System based on latest developments and global best practices.
  2. Joint collaboration with other stakeholders to identify and evaluate the problem statements faced by the accountancy profession and develop technological and digital solutions to address them.
  3. Exploration of the possibility of forming a digital A.I. lab to develop new prototypes for purposes of piloting and subsequently implementing for the accountancy profession, especially for Small Medium Practitioners (SMP).
  4. Discussion on potential adoption of a Master License exclusively for MIA members for the Malaysia market.
  5. Enhancement of the competencies and quality of the profession in the areas of audit, consulting and tax through the use of A.I. technology and achieve higher revenue, lower costs and managed risks for MIA members.

The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the MIA Conference 2017. Present at the signing of the MoU were MIA CEO Dr Nurmazilah Dato’ Mahzan, MyFinB Founder/CEO En Muhammad Nazri Muhd, MIA Registrar Tn Haji Sudirman Masduki and MyFinB Chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Daud Bakar.

MoA with Association of International Certified Professional Accountants

The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (the Association) renewed its MoA with the MIA on the fast track pathway for MIA members to become CGMAs. The pathway is now extended to Chartered Accountants from the MIA Qualifying Exam route in addition to MIA members admitted under Part I and II of the First Schedule to the Accountants Act 1967.

The MoA was signed on the sidelines of the MIA Conference 2017. Present at the signing of the MoA were MIA President En Salihin Abang, the Association Chief Executive for Management Accounting Mr Andrew Harding, MIA CEO Dr Nurmazilah Dato’ Mahzan and the Association Regional VP for Asia Pacific Mr Venkkat Ramanan.

The MOU between the MIA and CPA Australia provides special admission criteria for MIA members to become Associate Members of CPA Australia.

The signee representing MIA was its President Dato’ Mohammad Faiz while CPA Australia was represented by Ms Teresa Chong, Divisional President of CPA Australia, Malaysia Division. MoU with UiTM

The objective of the MoU between MIA and UiTM is to appoint UiTM through its Faculty of Accountancy as the examination body to conduct the MIA Qualifying Examination (“QE”).

MoU between Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and MIA and Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA)

The MIA with MICPA and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) UK signed a MoU whereby MIA members have the exclusive privilege to gain membership in CIPFA, a globally recognised membership body, for the public sector.

The MOU also covers collaboration on various strategic projects related to public financial management.

MoU with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)

Signed in conjunction with the MIA Conference 2014, the MoU sees ACCA providing an incentivised pathway for all MIA members of good standing who do not currently hold a professional accountancy qualification to obtain ACCA membership.

The MoU also calls for ACCA and MIA to collaborate on high-level policy and research work, utilising ACCA’s existing global research and insights, which may include the publication of surveys, research reports and joint events and conferences covering various issues faced by the profession.

ACCA was represented by Mr Stephen Heathcote, Executive Director – Markets while MIA was represented by its President, Datuk Johan Idris.

MoU with Indonesian Institute of Accountants (IAI)

The objective of the MoU is to develop and promote interests relevant to the accountancy profession in Malaysia and Indonesia in harmony with the objective of the MIA and the IAI and to facilitate closer cooperation in commerce and trade between the two countries and between the members of the two institutes.

The signees were MIA President, En Nik Mohd Hasyudeen Yusoff and IAI President, Bpk Ahmadi Hadibroto.
